Hitting drills today are not as simple as they were at the creation of softball, we have more analytics, technique, and feedback on what makes the perfect swing. The technology has evolved to create exercises and training tools that can be used by an athlete of any age. As a softball player myself, I decided to utilize one these tools called the VPX softball harness.
I began using this tool in high school and eventually purchased my own to use during my college ball days. It helped me shape my swing into one I was proud of because it increased the exit velocity of the ball off my bat. When I bought it, it encouraged me to take extra cuts before or after practice so that I would reap the full benefit that it offered.
According to the website, the features include that it adds 4-6 mph of power and velocity within 3 weeks or less, given that it is used as intended. While I didn’t use it frequently, I did see the promised results when I worked with the product. It helps with technique including weight transfer from the back foot to the front, keeps your hips and front side loaded, and increases speed.
On the website, it is emphasized that the technology that makes this product work is that it is movement based. When in use, the athlete will feel the adjustments when they swing because the harness is attached to bungee cords that rely on kinetic energy. If anyone knows anything about hitting a ball hard, its all about kinetic energy.
I believe this product works because it is backed by three Team USA softball players, and it was developed by pro and NCAA softball trainers. I thought it worked so well that now that I’m no longer playing, I’ve lent it to my college team to use this fall and when I work with the high school team in the spring, I will have them use it too. Due to the nature of the bungee cords, this product can be used for softball players of any age.
